The Bear Flag Museum will participate in the Sacramento Post Office’s Celebration for the Release of Flags of Our Nation California Stamp

Sacramento – On Saturday, June 14, 2008 (“Flag Day”) starting at 10 a.m. at the California State Capitol, the U. S. Postal Service will be hosting a free, community celebration for the issuance of the new First-Class postage stamp bearing the California State Flag.  This stamp is part of the new stamp series, Flags of Our Nation.

The Bear Flag Museum, www.BearFlagMuseum.org,  will be participating in this family friendly celebration by exhibiting some of the flags and other Bear Flag items in its collection at the event.  Projects for children will be available as well.  The Bear Flag Museum is a nonprofit virtual museum devoted to collecting in one location all things related to the California Bear Flag and California State Flag- law, history, trivia, graphics and photographs, primary and secondary textual materials on the Bear Flag, a bibliography.

The original Bear Flag was first created in June 1846 as part of the Bear Flag Revolt and June 14th is traditionally celebrated as its anniversary.  In 1911, the State of California adopted the Bear Flag as the State Flag of California and in 1953 the design of the State Flag was standardized.  The California Bear Flag will have its Centennial anniversary in February 2011.

The Bear Flag Museum is operated out of Sacramento by William J. Trinkle and Peggy Rose.
